We now carry LIQUI MOLY Molygen UV light reactive oil in stock alongside the rest of the LIQUI MOLY product lineup. Friction modifiers with unique properties make Molygen an indispensable tool that you never knew you needed. Continue reading to learn more about Molygen and how it can benefit you.

What is LIQUI MOLY Molygen?

So what sets LIQUI MOLY Molygen apart from the typical synthetic motor oils and even the other LIQUI MOLY motor oil products? The first, and most apparent property is the green hue of the oil. In the photo below, you can see the difference between unused LIQUI MOLY Molygen 5W-40 oil compared to unused LIQUI MOLY Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40 oil.

LIQUI MOLY Molygen 5W-40 Comparison

When UV light is introduced, the deep hue of green in the photo above transitions to a bright fluorescent green. Combine that with as little ambient light as possible, and this creates a surprisingly vibrant glowing effect.

Why Would I Use LIQUI MOLY Molygen?

LIQUI MOLY Molygen does everything their standard 5W-40 motor oil does with additional added benefits, so using it on your next oil change should be a no-brainer. The primary benefit of using Molygen over traditional oil is for leak detection.

Are you finding oil spots on your garage floor or driveway and can't figure out where they're coming from? Maybe it's high up inside your engine bay, or maybe your engine is covered in grime from previous, already repaired, leaks that prevent you from finding the source. By making LIQUI MOLY Molygen part of your next oil change, you can simply turn the lights out, turn on your UV light, and easily find where your leak(s) stem from.

It seems too good to be true, right? We thought the same thing, so we tested this in our shop. Without it being completely dark, we performed an oil change on our Dapper Drift AMG Mercedes using Molygen as seen in these photos. Not using a funnel, I spilled some while trying to pour the oil, hold lights, and direct photoswhich ended up being the perfect demonstration. I was able to test real-life use cases, tracing the glowing trail of oil all the way down to the car's lower splash shield.

Technical Specifications of LIQUI MOLY Molygen

LIQUI MOLY Molygen is a low-viscosity low-friction motor oil with their advertised "Molecular Friction Control." Already combined with LIQUI MOLY additives, Molygen reduces friction losses in your engine, providing optimum wear protection as well as preventing deposits from forming. This results in fuel savings and longer service life of your engine. As Molygen's composition includes its own additive package, there's no need nor is it recommended to use it with additional additives such as LIQUI MOLY Ceratec.

LIQUI MOLY Molygen doesn't make any sacrifices when it comes to the lubrication properties of the motor oil. The high thermal and friction stability allow Molygen to be recommended for these vehicle oil standards:

  • ACEA A3
  • ACEA B4
  • API SN
  • BMW Longlife-01
  • MB 229.5
  • Porsche A40
  • Renault RN 0700
  • VW 502 00
  • VW 505 00

LIQUI MOLY claims up to a 15% reduction in friction coefficient and up to 30% less engine wear. You can find more detailed technical information on LIQUI MOLY's official site or through the Molygen product information PDF

How Does LIQUI MOLY Molygen Work?

I'd like to clear up a couple of reoccurring misconceptions with Molygen as to why and how it glows. Various outlets mention that Molygen uses "radioactive dye," which is entirely fictional. If you were to look through Molygen's chemical makeup, you would notice that it contains high levels of Molybdenum (Molybdenum isn't new in the world of motor oils and other various lubricants) and high levels of Tungsten. Molybdenum comes from the inorganic compound Molybdate and Tungsten from the inorganic compound Tungstate. Molybdate and Tungstate are alike in the fact that, unlike other minerals, they don't form framework structures. This, coupled with the fact that their ions have similar radii, allows them to be substituted for one another and combine to become a solid solution; which in simple terms is a homogeneous solution that, for all intents and purposes, acts as one.

Although Tungstate, or in this form, Tungsten, adds additional lubricity, the main benefit in Molygen is that Tungstate has fluorescent/luminous properties when excited by short-wave ultra-violet light or cathode rays. The electrons of the Tungstate go through energy transitions, absorbing the energy of the UV radiation and re-emit that energy in the form of visible light. Throughout history, this property was used as a way of locating valuable Tungsten ore when mining. This means that Molygen's glowing properties come from safe, naturally-occurring minerals, and not a "radioactive dye."
