If your diesel powered BMW is having a tough time starting or isn't starting entirely, there's a good chance that your glow plugs need replacing. Even just one faulty glow plug can cause a hard start, and if one is bad, the rest will soon be following.

Diesel engines function differently than gasoline-powered engines as they use compression to cause combustion rather than using a spark plug. Starting a diesel engine on a warm day or when the engine is already warm is no different than starting a gasoline-powered engine. However, on a cold day, a diesel engine will not readily start without the assistance of glow plugs. Glow plugs heat the combustion chamber allowing proper combustion in these conditions.

Faulty glow plugs are easy to diagnose, the common symptoms are:

  • No Start
  • Slow Start
  • Missing/Miss Firing
  • Rough Idle
  • Hesitation
  • White Smoke from Exhaust
